Kevin Owens "quit" WWE on last night's Raw, announcing his decision minutes after losing an Intercontinental Title open challenge to Seth Rollins.

The former Universal Champion's night began with a miserable promo. He stated his life had been hell since joining Raw, but promised to turn things around by defeating Rollins, claiming "my bad summer ends tonight."

Predictably, it didn't. 'The Kingslayer' bested Owens in a fantastic back-and-forth bout that played out before a white-hot audience, with Rollins scoring the decisive pinfall in 22 minutes.

Raw then headed for a brief backstage interlude, before returning to the ring. A teary-eyed, emotional KO was still there, sat on a steel chair. After spending a few seconds stewing in his own sorrow, Owens raised a microphone to his lips, then uttered two simple words: "I quit."

An interesting twist, but 100% storyline, as KO signed a new five-year WWE deal in May. Still, it raises plenty of intrigue.

Owens's torrid 2018 hit a nadir when he was squashed by Braun Strowman at SummerSlam. With Raw's upper-midcard/main event scene looking increasingly crowded, WWE could use this as a way of writing KO out for a few months before returning with a fresh new direction.

Fingers crossed that whatever happens next helps improve the charismatic star's fortunes.
