Though it was to be expected following the four-way fracas on last week's episode of Raw, this week it was made official - The Miz will defend the Intercontinental Title against Cesaro, Kevin Owens, and Sami Zayn in a Fatal Four-Way match at Extreme Rules.

Cesaro challenged Miz for the championship last week at Payback, but Miz scored the win after a distraction from Zayn and Owens, who had brawled into the ring. Owens, meanwhile, had expressed his desire to become a three-time Intercontinental Champion, and also noted that he had never received a rematch after his most recent title loss.

This week, Shane and Stephanie McMahon assembled Miz, Cesaro, and Owens backstage to announce that they'd be competing for the belt in a triple-threat match at the Pay-Per-View, but Sami Zayn interrupted and requested a slot in the match. He was told he could join the bout if he defeated The Miz in a non-title match, which he did later in the show.

In WWE, singles matches featuring three or more men are typically conducted under "no disqualification" rules, meaning that the bout will fit into the Extreme Rules show perfectly.
