There are conflicting reports on the immediate future of New Japan star David Finlay.

Bodyslam.net's sources tell them that WWE bosses have brought Finlay's name up as a possible signee. It's believed that nobody has been outright tapping David up, but he has been discussed internally - that'd explain why his younger brother, who works as Uriah Connors, has had a bigger role on NXT programming lately.

Finlay seemed to be waving goodbye to NJPW fans recently, which prompted a follow up report from SelfMade. They claim theres "an extremely high chance" that Dave signs a dual contract to "primarily work for AEW and make trips back to Japan when New Japan needs him".

So, which one is it? Currently, no-one really knows, but it does look likely that Finlay will either head to WWE's third brand or pull double duty for Tony Khan's league whilst still maintaining a healthy schedule in Japan. If so, then suggestions he was actually kissing New Japan bye bye are premature.

Finlay has been earning rave reviews in NJPW circles for a while now. He won the New Japan Cup in 2025, and has been a 2-time IWGP Global Heavyweight Champion. David has actually worked for AEW before. He lost to Hangman Page on an episode of Dynamite in 2022, then returned to defeat Brody King as part of last year's co-promoted Wrestle Dynasty pay-per-view in January 2025.
