Joe Doering, whose pro wrestling success is undercelebrated as one of the sport's most inspiring real-life stories, is unfortunately battling brain cancer for a second time.

IMPACT Wrestling announced the news on Tuesday. Doering, 40, will be taking time away from the promotion to undergo treatment, having informed IMPACT officials the disease he first faced six years ago had come back.

Said Doering:-

“They told me in 2016 that I would never wrestle again, and I proved them wrong. Guess I’m going to have to do it again. I try to not get too sad or emotional about it. Staying positive really helped me the first time, and that’s what I’ll do again. Please keep me in your thoughts and spirits. I hope to get back in the ring again very soon. To the IMPACT Wrestling locker room: you are family to me and I look forward to seeing you again very, very soon.”

IMPACT executive Scott D'Amore commented:-

“I know our fans and the wider wrestling community will join everyone at IMPACT in keeping Joe and his wife Lindsay in their thoughts and prayers. Joe loves pro wrestling and we all look forward to him returning to action when he’s ready.”

Doering's first battle with brain cancer commenced in 2016, while he was working for All Japan Pro Wrestling. Although surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation treatment helped him overcome the disease, his doctors advised him that it may eventually return.

Nonetheless, Joe was back in a pro wrestling ring by November 2016, forging a successful run as one of the most successful foreign wrestlers of AJPW's modern era. This peaked in October 2017, as he defeated Suwana to become Triple Crown Champion for the second time in his career.

Doering has been with IMPACT on a full-time basis since November 2020. He wrestled for the IMPACT World Championship for the first time in July, losing to Josh Alexander. The 40-year-old had been undefeated in the Anthem-helmed promotion up to that point.
