Jim Ross Undergoing Surgery Today After Colon Cancer Diagnosis (AEW News)
Best wishes to AEW's Jim Ross as he undergoes colon cancer surgery.
Jim Ross will undergo surgery today after revealing his colon cancer diagnosis on 15 May.
“Getting ready for surgery, and that’s always stressful but I’ve prepared myself mentally and physically to endure the situation," said the legendary wrestling announcer on Grilling JR (h/t Wrestling Observer/Figure Four Online). Ross said that his doctors think he'll need around six days in hospital, adding that while he'll undergo a "less invasive" procedure, he isn't sure what it'll entail.
On what happens next, Ross said: “I’m thinking I’ll really slow down after the surgery. I’ll talk to the doctor, and see what he says. I’ll try to really slow down when this is over. Make a few autograph appearances, which I love to do, and see what Tony Khan’s got ready for me in AEW.”
Ross, 73, has been with AEW since its 2019 inception. Regarded as the consensus greatest announcer of all time, he has fought cancer before, overcoming skin cancer in 2021 and undergoing surgery on his hip in February 2024.
“The Khan family has done an amazing job at taking care of JR since I signed with the company," said Ross of AEW founder and CEO Tony Khan. "He’s very talent friendly.”
On the same episode, Jim also spoke of a long conversation he had with 'Stone Cold' Steve Austin after going public with his diagnosis. “I was at home and I got a call from Steve Austin," JR said, "and when we got off the phone, I looked at my phone and we talked for 43 minutes. 43 minutes."
"Here’s what your friends do: they call you, they talk to you, and at the end of the conversation, they tell you they love you." JR added. "That’s what Steve did. So that’s what I got. And that cheered me up. And it made me feel strong and vibrant.”
Best wishes to Jim Ross as he undergoes surgery.
