Kevin Owens Regains WWE United States Title At Battleground 2017
A ref bump helps 'The New Face Of America' to victory.
Kevin Owens and AJ Styles have been at each other's throats for months. Their first major singles clash came at Backlash, when KO defended his United States Title via countout, before 'The Phenomenal One' scored a shock championship victory at WWE's Madison Square Garden house show on July 7th.
They rematched again at last night's Battleground pay-per-view in Philadelphia, with Owens ending AJ's reign after just 17 days (and no successful defences).
As is often the case with KO's PPV matches these days, the bout ended in controversy. The referee was downed late in the contest, and while Styles almost had Owens tapping to a crossface, the hold was cradled into a double pin. Both men's shoulders were down, but the official awarded KO the win after making the three-count.
This finish should set up another match between the two, with SummerSlam (August 20th) a likely blow-off point for the feud. This is the third United States Title reign of Owens' career, with each of them coming in the past four months, beginning with his win over Chris Jericho at WrestleMania 33.
