This year's rumours of WWE roster releases were reportedly circulated by "shoddy sources."

Fightful Select has reported as much, having spoken to several people within the promotion, including staff and on-air talent. Said personnel had not heard anything about potential roster cuts.

The outlet notes, too, that even after the rumours emerged, there wasn't a lot of discussion backstage.

From this, it doesn't sound like something WWE's people were particularly worried about.

Rumours of roster cuts grew stronger in April, when it was announced that the UFC's parent company, Endeavor, had agreed a deal to purchase the market-leading wrestling promotion. That deal is yet to fully close, with a resolution expected later in 2023.

Recent years have been characterised by swooping rounds of WWE roster releases. These were particularly prominent after the COVID-19 pandemic swept the globe in 2020, when it became common for the company to shed dozens of wrestlers and staff members at once, attracting controversy. That WWE used the global health crisis as an excuse for the releases while entering a period of record profitability did not go unmentioned.

Interestingly, Fightful notes, too, that although WWE's reported "hiring freeze" hasn't been official, it isn't an accident that no new wrestlers have been hired for the main roster since December.
