Lucha Underground Planning Second Season
They just need to find the money to fund it.
Steve Austin's podcast to say that El Rey wants LU back for a 40 episode second season, but they have to find the funding for it. Van Wagenen said that Lucha Underground wants to maintain its high quality of production, which would require more funding than what El Rey is currently willing to provide. He noted that there's an effort from El Rey, producer Mark Burnett's company and LU's investors to find additional money to help fund the second season of the show. It was also mentioned that they are looking at Netflix, iTunes, a secondary broadcast partner, DVD sales and more as ways to make more money. He added that when funding is secured, a second season of Lucha Underground will be formally announced. If they could get on Netflix that would be a huge thing for them because it really is more like a television show rather than a traditional wrestling show. If they want to start the second season in October then taping would likely have to start in August, so the clock is ticking for them. Van Wagenen knows Austin well because they worked together on WWE's Tough Enough show in 2011 with Austin as the host. It's a good show to listen to if you're a fan of Lucha Underground and want to know more about the company.
Lucha Underground is wrapping up their first season with their final shows airing in August and there is some uncertainty if they will get renewed for a follow-up on the El Rey Network.
