Lucha Underground Set To Return?
Could a new season of Lucha Underground be on the horizon for the first time since 2018?
Preliminary talks have been held about a potential return for Lucha Underground, the cult studio promotion co-developed by filmmaker Robert Rodriguez for El Rey Network between 2014 and 2018.
Dave Meltzer writes as much in this week's Wrestling Observer Newsletter. Per the report, the revival would feature the same type of content as before, but would go by a different name.
Lucha Underground's fourth and final season concluded on 7 November 2018. Budgetary concerns led to its cancellation, with commentator Vampiro telling Chris Van Vliet last year that the promotion had essentially dissolved.
Though the series never commanded huge viewerships, Lucha Underground boasted a loyal, cult following, filling a specific niche in the American wrestling market. Melding lucha style ring work with cinematic presentation and supernatural elements, it was a bold, ambitious show, and helped facilitate the rise of Pentagon Jr., Jeff Cobb (as Matanza Cueto), Ricochet (as Prince Puma) and others as television wrestling stars.
The promotion's final days were unfortunately marred with controversy, as multiple wrestlers spoke out against restrictive contracts preventing them from working elsewhere until new seasons (that never came) were produced. A class-action lawsuit involving AEW's Ivelisse, WWE's Santos Escobar, and more was filed in February 2019, which was eventually settled in the wrestlers' favour.
