Major Update On Mercedes Moné's Wrestling Future After NJPW Injury
Latest on Mercedes Moné after horror injury in Willow Nightingale NJPW loss.
Mercedes Moné suffered what looked like a nasty injury at the weekend, falling to an early defeat to AEW's Willow Nightingale in an NJPW STRONG Women's Championship match she was originally scheduled to win.
Dave Meltzer reported as much on Wrestling Observer Radio, stating that Moné was actually booked to go over Nightingale at NJPW STRONG Resurgence this Sunday (21 May), becoming the inaugural STRONG Women's Champion in the process. Her suspected ankle injury prevented this from happening, bringing the match to a premature end - and prompting NJPW to switch the winner.
Interestingly, Meltzer noted, too, that Moné has signed a new deal with NJPW/STARDOM parent company Bushiroad. There is currently no word on its length, nor has there been any indication of how many dates come as part of it.
Moné is believed to have suffered a broken ankle in the Willow match, reports PWInsider's Mike Johnson. How long she will be out of action is currently unclear.
Nightingale qualified to face Moné at STRONG Resurgence after defeating Momo Kohgo in a tournament semi-final that same night, while Mercedes bested Stephanie Vaquer to reach the main event.
