Shane McMahon is reportedly the subject of considerable backstage heat in WWE, primarily for his role in producing this year's men's Royal Rumble.

Dave Meltzer wrote in the latest Wrestling Observer/Figure Four Online Daily Update that after helping produce the 2020 and 2021 Rumbles, Shane took a more hands-on role this year. While he isn't a regular WWE producer, Vince assigned him to the 2022 men's bout, which, like the women's, was constantly chopped and changed. While the Rumble winners were made known to "those on the inside," other people in the company were told differently.

Shane entered the Royal Rumble at number 28, lasting until the final three, when he was eliminated by eventual winner Brock Lesnar. Kevin Owens was thrown out by McMahon along the way, with the 52-year-old also besting former UFC fighter Riddle in a stand-up striking exchange.

Per Meltzer, the stories that have emerged stating Shane has heat with the locker room are accurate. He is effectively corroborating a Ringside News report stating that McMahon "tried to book the Rumble around himself" and openly buried fellow producer Jamie Noble, with Shane described as "confrontational and gung-ho" while arguing to put himself over, fighting with people along the way.

That him parachuting in and doing this would upset full-time roster members is understandable.

As reported on Monday, McMahon is currently set for a big WWE heel run involving appearances at Elimination Chamber 2022 and WrestleMania 38.
