In a surprising move, WWE has hired longtime combat sports announcer Mauro Ranallo to become the new voice of SmackDown when the show transitions to the USA Network on January 7th, 2016. While Ranallo is best-known for his association with mixed martial arts and boxing, the lifelong pro wrestling fan actually got his start calling matches for All-Star Wrestling in Vancouver at just 16 years of age. He's also worked with Stampede Pro Wrestling and was recently one of the commentators for the English language broadcasts of New Japan Pro Wrestling. Mauro spent years as one of the main announcers for Japan's Pride Fighting Championship and also worked the booth as a member of the Strikeforce commentary team. Currently he calls GLORY kickboxing as well as boxing on Showtime and his deal with WWE will allow him to continue both of those jobs. Ranallo has MIchael Cole to thank for what he calls his "dream job." The WWE's vice president of on-air talent reached out to him about a month ago via email to gauge his interest in joining the company. He sent in a tape and everyone - including Vince McMahon - was impressed with his work and thought he would do a great job selling the entertainment aspect of their product. "Pro wrestling was my first love and my first entry into broadcasting," Ranallo said. "And here I am, about to turn 46 with nearly 30 years as a broadcaster and it's come full circle."
