Moxley had originally been scheduled to face off against Juice Robinson in a No Disqualification match, but was prevented from making the show due to the travel issues caused by Typhoon Hagibis. Zack Sabre Jr. was also forced to pull out.

In lieu of Moxley, New Japan announced that Robinson and Lance Archer would face off for the vacated belt. The latter prevailed in the replacement contest. It becomes the third championship the big Texan has won with the company, having previously lifted the IWGP Tag Team titles on three occasions alongside Dave Boy Smith Jr.

Following the contest, the new champ was waylaid by David Finlay, making his return to action following shoulder surgery.
