News On WWE's SummerSlam Plans If John Cena Is Out

A triple threat match for the WWE Title could happen.

The second biggest match at this year's WWE SummerSlam pay-per-view event was going to be WWE Champion Seth Rollins vs. US Champion John Cena, but it might not happen due to Cena's broken nose that required surgery a few weeks ago due to an errant high knee by Rollins. The backup plan if Cena can't compete is to have WWE Champion Rollins defend the title against Randy Orton and Sheamus in a triple threat match, according to Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio. Triple H revealed on Raw that Cena was 50/50 in terms of his chances of making it to the match and apparently that's a real number. That's why this week's Raw ended with Orton nearly beating Rollins and then Sheamus nearly cashing in on Rollins. Since both guys have a legitimate complaint about almost winning the WWE Title, it makes sense for them to be in the title picture. Another option is to have Rollins defend the WWE Title against Orton in a singles match since the Raw match ended in a disqualification. The problem with that is they've done it too many times this year, so fans may not be as excited about that kind of match.Cena's on Tough Enough tonight and is expected to be on Raw next week. However, WWE likely won't know Cena's status for sure until next Monday before Raw.
