There's something inherently sad about WrestleMania X8's sparse scaffolding stage that expressed how bereft of life the promotion was in early 2002.

WWE wouldn't escape from a perpetual state of flux for years, with this Toronto supercard the biggest advert for the directionless freewheeling vehicle it had rapidly become.

Though Hulk Hogan Vs The Rock is undeniably iconic, it's on an island in the middle of a polluted sea. Stone Cold Steve Austin knew how 'Hollywood' would behave and rejected the match, but doesn't exactly craft a cinematic showdown with Scott Hall to come out better off for it. Triple H's feud with Stephanie McMahon wasn't enough to carry the title programme he patently couldn't give a sh*t about, so inevitable was his victory.
