Ranking The 10 Biggest Wrestling Matches Coming In September
What's usually a dead month is set to be one of the biggest this year.
Traditionally, September has been unkind to wrestling. In WWE, it's a month that follows SummerSlam, and thus, is the beginning of a real creative slope (I mean, out of the usual mediocrity).
Meanwhile, for New Japan Pro Wrestling, September comes fresh off the heels of the grueling G1 Climax tournament, which leaves all its best talent completely spent and not at 100 percent until the January 4th Tokyo Dome show. This leaves most of the popular wrestling landscape feeling hungover as autumnal depression starts to creep in.
However, the reputation of the month has started to improve somewhat. In recent years, American independents Chikara and PWG have capitalized on the September slump by putting on their awesome King of Trios and Battle of Los Angeles tournaments.
And in 2018, when the in-ring quality is going off on all cylinders, the big boys are stepping up to the plate as well. From All In to Hell in a Cell to New Japan's Destruction tour and Fighting Spirit Unleashed, there's a lot to mark on your calendar as "must-watch" matches.
From first-time dream matches to exciting finishes to feuds, 2018 isn't gonna slow down in a traditionally slow month.
10. Cody vs. Juice Robinson (New Japan)
2018 has been a difficult year for Juice Robinson. While he's certainly proved to be one of the most affable babyfaces on the mic, with many of his peers calling him the best promo in the business, he's been booked on a string of bad luck. After winning the US Title from Jay White at the Cow Palace, Robinson proceeded to have an awful G1, losing a string of matches and only garnering 6 points.
As if that wasn't enough, on the final day of the tournament, a returning Cody pinned Juice in a tag match against him and David Finlay. Afterward, Cody held the US Championship over Juice and declared his intention to challenge for the belt.
The match has been announced for Fighting Spirit Unleashed at the Walter Pyramid on September 30th. With this being the only title match currently announced for the event, it's set to be one of the show's main events.
Despite Cody's truce with Kenny Omega and the Bullet Club Elite, he's still a ripe pri*k to Juice. And with how over Juice was as a babyface last time they were in California, the match should be a pretty heated one.
