The superhuman John Cena made the impossible recovery from injury that only he could, months and months ahead of projections - and in an era where nothing was a surprise, nobody saw it coming. He acknowledged this, and the almost involuntary pop, with a wry grin before normal, performative service resumed.

It instantly cast Cena as a love-to-hate figure more than the enemy of modern pro wrestling - a position fans took several more years to fully realise towards the very end of a run that even his biggest detractors, your writer included, couldn't help but respect.
