News that WWE had cancelled all December pay-per-view plans broke on Thursday, with the promotion shelving the TLC 2021 show originally set for the 19th before being switched to the 12th.

Fightful Select have since issued a report bringing new information to light on the matter. Per their update, the promotion made the decision not to hold a pay-per-view in December over a month ago, updating their internal schedules accordingly.

As for potential reasons, Fightful's sources suggested that proximity to the new 1 January supercard could be the reason. That show, WWE Day 1, will take place in Atlanta, Georgia, and is believed to be a Nick Khan vehicle.

The changes to WWE's pay-per-view schedule mean the promotion only has two supercards left in 2021. The first, Crown Jewel 2021, takes place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on Thursday 21 October. It'll be followed by Survivor Series 2021 from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York on Sunday 21 November, wrapping WWE's pay-per-view calendar for the year.

Day 1's existence means WWE will hold two pay-per-views in January 2022, with that year's Royal Rumble taking place on the 29th of the month.
