Kairi Sane indicating to WWE that she wanted to return to her native Japan may have driven her release from the company.

Per Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio, Sane was cut by the promotion after expressing a desire to move home. Kairi was one of 24 WWE wrestlers let go by the TKO Group-helmed organisation on Friday, 24 April, along with Aleister Black, Zelina Vega, the entire Wyatt Sicks faction, the Motor City Machine Guns, and more.

Sane's release drew a significant online response, with thousands of fans protesting the move, spawning the '#WeWantKairi' trend on X. Even WWE broadcaster Jackie Redmond tweeted, then deleted, the hashtag.

Despite this, it doesn't look like WWE will be bringing back Sane to resolve her unfinished storyline for Asuka, which has been ongoing for months. The long-running tension between Kairi and her now-former tag team partner looks like it will remain unresolved.

Sane's status has been the subject of multiple reports over the past 24 hours. It began with PWInsider stating that she had already returned to Japan following her release, and therefore wouldn't appear on Raw to conclude the Asuka storyline, despite speculation. WrestleVotes added that despite the '#WeWantKairi' movement, WWE wouldn't be bringing her back, as the promotion didn't want to set a precedent where it reverses decisions due to fan pressure.

As Kairi Sane was released by WWE before her contract's natural expiry date, she will likely be bound to a 90-day non-compete period, preventing her from signing or appearing for other wrestling promotions.
