The illness that has sidelined WWE star Bray Wyatt for most of 2023 was both career and life-threatening.

Fightful Select has reported as much, noting, fortunately, that the former WWE and Universal Champion has "improved significantly." The 36-year-old has been off company television since February, dropping a planned WrestleMania 39 programme with Bobby Lashley amidst reports on Bray's illness.

Fightful states that after close to six months out of action, Bray is moving closer to clearance, though he and WWE have been taking extra precautions to protect the star's long-term health. Creative ideas have been presented for a comeback and September has been mentioned as a potential target, though Wyatt gaining clearance before then isn't guaranteed.

In a further update, Fightful's Sean Ross Sapp added that at one point, Wyatt had been hospitalised. Regarding a comeback, sources close to Bray indicated in July that it is "tough to get clearance from these things," and until last week, the line on Wyatt's return was "we have no idea when he'll be back."

Wyatt-adjacent sources were also upset when false reports that Bray was ready to return (and merely waiting for the right creative) emerged earlier this year. Clearly, this wasn't the case - and WWE sources were similarly fine with indicating to Sapp that Wyatt wouldn't be back for last week's SummerSlam 2023 premium live event, not wanting to set unrealistic expectations.

All the best to Bray Wyatt as his recovery continues.
