While the two parties are yet to enter discussions over an extension, negotiations are expected to commence sometime in Autumn.

The scenario is believed to be different to Adam Cole and Pete Dunne. Cole's situation, in particular, left WWE blindsided, as the promotion was operating under the assumption that the new AEW signing's contract expired in December (around a similar time to Gargano's) when it was really up in July. Though Cole ended up signing a short-term extension to work through SummerSlam 2021 weekend, he left WWE on 27 August and debuted for AEW at All Out 2021 (5 September).

Regarding Gargano's deal, WWE went back and reviewed a number of contracts following the administrative error that led to Malakai Black being bound to a 30-day non-compete clause rather than the standard 90 days for main roster wrestlers.

Gargano has been signed to WWE since April 2016. He has since become one of the most successful wrestlers in NXT history, holding the North American, Tag Team, and main NXT Championships, becoming the brand's first ever Triple Crown Champion in the process.
