Report: Jon Moxley Has ZERO Interest In Returning To WWE
Before re-signing, AEW's Jon Moxley had no interest in jumping back to WWE.
Jon Moxley had zero interest in returning to WWE prior to agreeing a five-year contract extension with All Elite Wrestling.
AEW announced on Friday that its reigning World Champion had signed a new deal including a degree of exclusivity and a coaching/mentoring role. Dave Meltzer has since brought new information on the matter to the table, specifically relating to where Moxley's interests were at prior to inking his new deal.
Reporting on Wrestling Observer Radio, Meltzer reported that Moxley had no interest in going back to WWE. At all. The reigning AEW World Champion didn't even want to use the market leaders to play them and AEW against each other in order to land more money. At one stage, he had discussed continuing as a free agent, though there's no word on how serious those talks were - and Mox didn't want people speculating on him potentially going back to WWE.
Said Meltzer (h/t WrestlingNews.co):-
“I think the key to all of this is..you know, he signed a five-year deal. So as far as why so long? I think the answer was that he just felt…he’s not going to WWE. He doesn’t want to go to WWE, doesn’t want to put on of wanting to go to WWE and play both sides to get more money. He doesn’t want people speculating that he’s going to WWE. He wants all speculation over, and he’s with AEW for five more years. I know at some point he discussed…I don’t know how seriously, but just being a free agent and doing that as opposed to signing a new deal.”
Moxley has been with AEW since May 2019, having debuted at the original Double Or Nothing pay-per-view. Prior to this, he had been with WWE between 2011 and 2019, working as Dean Ambrose.
The 36-year-old's WWE departure became a protracted saga, with news that he wasn't planning on renewing his contract breaking several months prior to his actual split in April. A former WWE Champion, his exit from the company was followed by an incendiary Talk Is Jericho interview, in which the former Ambrose took aim at the promotion and its hierarchy for how he and his character had been handled - particularly in his last few years.
