Rey Mysterio's Lucha Underground Deal Is For Three Seasons
Star is locked into long-term deal with AAA affiliate.
According to this week's issue of The Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Rey Mysterio originally signed a three-season deal with Lucha Underground. Unless the promotion folds before season four is taped, he would not be able to work anywhere else with a U.S. television deal for quite some time.
Earlier this year, rumors began to circulate that Mysterio, who had left WWE for Triple A in early 2015, was interested in rejoining the company after the Mexican promotion suffered issues with talent and finances. His work with Triple A's sister promotion, Lucha Underground, was believed to be a roadblock, as the LU contracts stars sign stipulate that they can't work for a competing promotion (one with U.S. TV) until all of their taped work is aired.
Though it's believed that such an edict wouldn't hold up in court, it has yet to be challenged, and the fact that Mysterio is locked in for another season after the one that's currently taping renders it moot in his case.
The WON has also reported that Mysterio only has two dates left on his contract with Triple A, so unless the organization can offer him a new contract, his work in Mexico is done for the time being. Lucha Underground talents aren't allowed to work with Mexico's Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre promotion or its affiliate, Lucha Libre Elite.
