WWE apparently has a secret rule in place stating that opposing tag teams are limited to just one save per bout.

Dave Meltzer reaffirmed as much on today's episode of Wrestling Observer Radio. This explains last night's episode of WWE Raw, where The Miz and Ciampa were disqualified in a bout with AJ Styles and Ezekiel. A bewildering finish saw Ciampa enter the ring and attack Styles while Miz was the legal man, leading to the referee calling for the bell.

The heels had already made one save prior to this. Thus, the secret rule came into play, and Miz and Ciampa were disqualified.

This rule's existence has been reported several times over the years, meaning it isn't necessarily new. Notably, Raw announcer Jimmy Smith effectively confirmed it during an episode of Raw last September, stating that Natalya was unable to make the save in a tag pitting her and Tamina against Nikki A.S.H. and Rhea Ripley as her side had no legal interjections remaining.

Nonetheless, there are likely countless examples of matches that go against this rule, so fundamental are saves to accepted tag wrestling psychology.
