Fightful Select has posted an update on rumours regarding a possible comeback for popular cult promotion Lucha Underground. The company's official X account caused a stir in April when it posted teasers seemingly hyping up a grand return.

According to more recent reports, MGM and Amazon "have controlling interest" in LU. Rather interestingly, an AEW source Fightful spoke to suggested that there "could be some WWE involvement" going forwards, but that obviously hasn't been confirmed at time of writing.

The website didn't exactly pour cold water over that, but did say that others they chatted to "believe the recent buzz is a way to get people talking ahead of a YouTube channel going live with Lucha Underground content". That'd make a lot more sense - this could all be a vehicle to promote archived shows/matches/content online.

Fightful noted that MGM and Amazon have received inquiries about purchasing the LU library, but they've never gone for it. Instead, they've elected to hold onto what they have.

Nothing from this point on here was included in Fightful Select's write-up. It's all opinion. However, there's a good chance that MGM and Amazon recognise the value sitting at their fingertips. Lucha Underground made waves a decade plus ago and represented something totally different to WWE.

Pre-AEW and even pre-NXT boom, it was a joy to behold for wrestling fans sick and tired of Vince McMahon-led tropes across Raw and SmackDown. Revisiting Underground via YouTube sounds like a hoot, and it could possibly lead to something more in the future.

Only time will tell.
