Ah, Nexus, what could have been? What started off as the hottest angle in WWE in a long time quickly died out thanks to that whole 'buried by John Cena' thing, one of the few times that oft-used excuse was actually legitimate. The wheels had come off and the group began to splinter, but everyone had pretty much stopped caring at this point.

CM Punk had spent a few months on the injured reserve list, but was doing commentary in order to continue a TV presence. Punk would frequently criticise Cena for his actions towards The Nexus, in that irritatingly well-balanced way that Punk tends to argue his points. Punk's stint on commentary came to an end after 'shockingly' attacking Cena two shows in a row, and he quickly made clear the reasons behind his actions.

It transpired that Punk had assumed control of what was left of The Nexus, and the group took on a somewhat more sinister feel as a result. The personnel of the group changed too, with Mason Ryan the most notable arrival. It didn't change the result however, as the group were taken out by Randy Orton one-by-one on the road to WrestleMania XXVII.

Punk has always been a great stable leader, but the mixture of a dead group and Punk's continuing disinterest in what was happening around him led to a fairly forgettable time for all involved. This was by far the least interesting role Punk had in WWE.
