For those still holding out hope that The Rock will return to the squared circle to face Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 38, the eight-time WWE Champion has moved to play down the chance of any such bout taking place at next year's Showcase of the Immortals.

While promoting his new movie Red Notice in an interview with Dish Nation's Andrew Freund, Dwayne Johnson was outright asked whether a meeting with the Head of the Tale was on the horizon for 'Mania 38.

The Great One downplayed those rumours of Reigns vs. Rock for next year's WrestleMania, saying there's no truth to them, but refusing to rule out such a match happening somewhere down the line.

Per Wrestling Inc, Johnson said:

"Andrew, you've know me for a very long time. I can tell you that there is no truth to that right now. Possibly down the road, we will see. We stay very close, myself and Roman Reigns, and I'm very happy, very proud for the work that he's doing, as well as The Usos, my other family members. So, those guys will continue to do what they're doing and we'll see down the road."

With Roman having dominated on SmackDown for a year now, some had speculated that the whole family vibe of The Bloodline and Reigns' High Chief status would be a natural way to have The Rock return to WWE and challenge his cousin.

That story clearly writes itself and could be fantastic if handled correctly, but it looks as if we might have to wait a little longer - potentially WrestleMania 39? - to see these two behemoths clash.

Of course, this once again opens up the question of just who will face Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 38, with Brock Lesnar seemingly the current frontrunner for that spot right now.
