Following repeated clashes with Intercontinental Champion The Miz and former Tag Team Champions Sheamus and Cesaro, Raw General Manager Kurt Angle announced Monday that former Shield members Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins, and Dean Ambrose will join forces to take on their foes at TLC 2017. The bout will be a TLC match.

The reunion of The Shield follows a months-long storyline that began in April, when Ambrose joined Reigns and Rollins on Raw following the Superstar Shakeup. Rollins soon began trying to earn the trust of his former partner, eventually winning Ambrose over after several weeks. The two men soon made a run at the Raw Tag Team Titles, beating Sheamus and Cesaro for the gold. Soon afterwards, Sheamus and Cesaro joined forces with The Miz, whose feud with Roman Reigns put the former Shield members on the same side.

The Shield made their in-ring debut at TLC 2012 and immediately became one of the most feared stables in WWE history, thanks to a long undefeated streak in six-man tag-team action. Within a couple of years, the group became hugely popular, but Rollins soon turned on his partners, shattering the team. By 2016, all three men had reigned as WWE Champion, though they've all struggled to connect with fans as singles babyfaces.
