6. It Was ThunderDomed (2020)

This could be considered harsh by some, which is fair enough.

2020's version was the only SummerSlam in history to take place in front of exactly 0 fans live. In fairness, WWE didn’t have a say in the matter due to the ongoing global pandemic. Rallying, they had to make the best of a bad situation, but the lack of natural ambience makes 2020’s show pretty eerie to revisit today.

It didn't help that Vince McMahon and others repeated the, "You'll Never See It Coming" tagline over and over until everyone was sick of it before the pay-per-view had even aired. That line was in reference to a bold Roman Reigns return and alliance with Paul Heyman. He's still going strong with that 'Tribal Chief' gimmick today, so that's cool.

Almost everything else? It was a big meh, but that had more to do with the complete lack of organic crowd noise inside the "ThunderDome" (Amway/Kia Center in Orlando, Florida). Thus, matches like Bayley vs. Asuka, a grudge bout pitting Sonya Deville vs. Mandy Rose, Asuka (again) vs. Sasha Banks, Drew McIntyre vs. Randy Orton and Bray Wyatt's 'Fiend' vs. Braun Strowman struggled to gain much momentum.

Everyone was working hard, but the gist of this collection is that every single SummerSlam had a duff moment. For 2020, it was the "ThunderDome" setting itself. In fact, most wouldn't remember this at all had Roman not returned with a bang towards the end of the so-so headliner between Wyatt's alter ego and Braun.

Needs must, sure, but Homer Simpson would've renamed this facility the ThunderD'oh.
