The much-speculated-upon news was confirmed by Linda's attorney Laura Brevetti as part of a Washington Post report on the former CEO as she finds herself nominated by President Elect Donald Trump to be the U.S. Secretary of Education.

There have been suspicions the two were no longer formally together dating back years, including before Vince, John Laurinaitis and WWE were placed under investigation for the sexual assault and trafficking of Janel Grant in a January 2024 lawsuit. During a March 2022 interview with Pat McAfee arranged to promote McAfee's involvement in WrestleMania 38, the former Chairman referred to Linda as his "wife at the time" when referencing an old story between the two. He'd also admitted to multiple affairs on multiple occasions, most notably in a revealing 2001 interview with Playboy Magazine.

Linda had distanced herself from the various controversies until she was implicated in one herself - the lawsuit against herself, Vince, WWE and TKO that alleges that "underaged Ring Boys were groomed, exploited, and sexually abused by Phillips, who targeted children from broken homes" and that "Defendants were fully aware of the systemic and pervasive abuse and did nothing to prevent or stop it."

Despite their separation, the McMahons remain legally married. Their relationship has long been speculated upon, with reports suggesting they had been living apart for years prior to this formal acknowledgment. The pair were married in 1966, when she was 17 and he was 21, as covered in the "Mr McMahon" Netflix documentary. Their two children, Shane and Stephanie McMahon, also went on to take integral roles in the company on-screen and off.
