Wrestlemania 29 Live: New Intercontinental Champion Crowned

By Matt Aspin /

The WrestleMania 29 pre-show kicked off on YouTube and Facebook with the usual WWE self promotion as Jim Ross, Kofi Kingston and Dusty Rhodes discussed various matches on the PPV card later in the night. As great as it was to listen to Rhodes and Ross it seemed like an odd decision to put Kingston on the pre-show analysis team rather than have him compete on the actual PPV. Once all the chit chat was over we went to the advertised pre-show Intercontinental Championship match between the UK's own Wade Barrett and Mike 'The Miz'. Yay. It's not surprising that WWE chose to move this one to the pre-show but it's a shame a guy like Barrett who should be a part of WWE's top tier by now is missing 'Mania once again after spending last year on the injured reserve list. Barrett described his match as "slumming it" and man he hit the nail right on the head. Likewise it's weird to think The Miz is not only unbeaten at 'Mania (3-0) he also headlined Wrestlemania 27 against John Cena and won! I'm not sure if we're allowed to remember that though or if it's now been wiped from WWE's history books? The match itself was typical of both men with Miz doing a hideous job of playing the babyface. Exactly why his feud with The Big Show was dropped is beyond me as it was the only time anyone seemed to legitimately care about Miz since he switched camps to join the good guys. Anyway, after failing to hit their respective finishing moves The Miz somehow slapped on his crappy looking Figure Four Leg Lock. Mercifully Barrett reached out for the ropes and the hold was broken. Unfortunately for Barrett though Miz managed to slap the hold on again and scored the victory via submission to become new Intercontinental Champion. Onwards and upwards Wade. Let's hope this weak looking opener is not a sign of things to come. Remember if you're Tweeting to use the hash tag #WrestleMania29 and copy us in @WhatCulture so we can see what's on your mind.
