Doug Furnas and Phil LaFon made their WWF debut at the 1996 Survivor Series, defeating then-WWF Tag Team Champions Owen Hart and the British Bulldog in a traditional Survivor Series elimination match. Announcers Vince McMahon, Jim Ross, and Mr. Perfect really put over their skills, power, and tag-team abilities in the match, and- with such a decisive win over two established teams such as Owen/Bulldog and The New Rockers (Marty Jannetty and Leif Cassidy) - it seemed as if they would leapfrog other teams directly to a tag team championship reign. Instead, they had one pay-per-view title match: at In Your House: Final Four in February of 1997, Furnas/LaFon defeated Bulldog and Owen, but by disqualification, when Owen hit LaFon with his Slammy Award. Bulldog had LaFon set up for his running powerslam already, so it wasn't even a "DQ to save the titles from the red-hot babyfaces:" it was just to further the Owen/Bulldog tension storyline. Shortly after their one title shot, LaFon was injured in a car accident, and when they returned to WWF in late-1997, it was in a very, very minor role in the Team USA vs. Team Canada at the 1997 Survivor Series. After both men were eliminated by Vader, they were shipped to ECW- where they would briefly hold the organization's tag team titles- as part of a failed WWF Invasion (teaming with WWF "stars" like Brakkus and Droz.)
