Bret Hart was a much loved 14 year WWF veteran when Vince McMahon unceremoniously screwed the Canadian in 1997. To make matters worse, the screwjob went down in Montreal, Canada. The fans who paid good money that evening were expecting to see their hero overcome the evil American. What actually went down was a none finish that was passed off as a Michaels win. In one unthinkable move Vince had ripped off his 20,000 strong audience in attendance. Worldwide fans were equally fuming, the popular Hart had been cheated by the hated Michaels - it wasn't heel heat on Michaels, it was genuine heat. It was ironic that Vince ended up doing HUGE business off the back of all of this. Cheating the audience for most businesses would be a disaster for future trading. The opposite ended up here, spurred on by seeing this bad McMahon get his commupence, fans tuned in their droves to see Steve Austin beat the boss down. Perhaps the whole Daniel Bryan business could go much the same way, time is often the great decider in the wrestling business.
