This show had the main event that everybody really wanted to see at Wrestlemania the month prior. The Rock finally defeated Triple H to win his first WWF Championship as a babyface. For whatever reason, the writing team wanted to go against the grain for Wrestlemania, because the obvious story would be Rock winning back the belt a full year after dropping it. Instead, they had Triple H be the first heel to retain the championship in Wrestlemania history. But historic and unprecedented doesnt necessarily mean good, and predictable doesnt necessarily mean bad. It certainly helped that the one-on-one Backlash match was one of the best matches Rock and Hunter ever had that didnt involve a ladder. This Pay Per View is also known for the so-underrated-it-might-actually-be-overrated-now Light Heavyweight Championship match between Dean Malenko and Scotty Too Hotty, as well as Big Show dressing as The Showster in a Hulk Hogan parody against Kurt Angle. A forgotten angle on this show was the face turn of the Dudley Boyz, where Bubba Ray was obsessed with putting Trish Stratus through a table. Those Damn Dudleyz went from being two of the most hated guys to two of the most beloved through this storyline.
