It is likely that by now the news of CM Punk's sudden resignation from the WWE has filtered down to even the most casual of wrestling fans. Despite the massive amount of speculation surrounding Punk's future, we still aren't much closer to knowing what the Chicago-native plans to do after his unceremonious departure from sport entertainment's premier organisation. One of the recurring rumours is that Punk may be interested in trying his luck at Mixed Martial Arts. It's no secret that Punk is a huge MMA fan and is regularly seen cage-side at UFC events indeed the night before last month's Royal Rumble, Punk attended UFC 169 before making a last-minute journey to Pittsburgh (perhaps an early sign of his disaffection with the WWE). The idea of an established WWE wrestler attempting to transition to WWE is not a new one. Dave Batista (1-0), Bobby Lashley (10-2) and Brock Lesnar (5-3) have all dabbled in MMA; Lesnar went beyond the 'dabbling' stage to win the UFC Heavyweight championship, though a battle outside the cage with diverticulitis would force him to throw in the towel. Critics of Punk's rumoured entry into MMA have made the case that Punk has neither the physical power of the aforementioned wrestlers nor their amateur wrestling backgrounds. However, Punk is by no means a newcomer to martial arts he has trained Brazilian Jiu Jitsu under legendary coach Rener Gracie for over 12 years. Introducing Punk to the UFC could be a hugely lucrative deal for the company. During his time with the promotion, Lesnar was easily the UFC's biggest PPV draw and headlined what remains to this day the most bought PPV event, UFC 100. Particularly with Punk's undeniable skill to sell a fight, there is no reason to suspect that he wouldn't be a similarly large draw for the company.
