This is one of those matches where it isn't necessarily here for the competitive matchup they had. It's here because of how they told an excellent story as Lesnar physically dismantled Hogan and beat him with a bearhug. How many matches in the 2000s and beyond ended in a bearhug? Very few. It's an old school move. It worked here. The story was pretty simple with Lesnar taking on Hogan a few weeks before his WWE Title match against The Rock at SummerSlam 2002. Hogan was the guy that Lesnar had to physically dismantle to show the world that he was ready for The Rock and that's what happened. There was a key moment in the match where Hogan hit his famous punches to the head, big boot and leg drop combo. It won him so many matches over the years. Not this time. Lesnar kicked out. Soon after, Lesnar applied the bearhug that wore Hogan to the point that he passed out and Lesnar wouldn't let go even after the bell rang to end the match. Lesnar was a star on the rise that beat one of the biggest names in the history of professional wrestling. Hogan did a great job in putting him over in a major way too. This was the perfect example of how you use a big name to put over the next future star.
