WWE Network Cancellation Page Crashes After Royal Rumble

WWE fans have started a Twitter #CancelWWENetwork campaign which has resulted in the Network cancellation page crashing. The hashtag was the leading trend in North America after Sunday's Royal Rumble show in which Roman Reigns won the Rumble match. Fans were furious that the popular Daniel Bryan didn't win. That resulted in photos being tweeted of fans cancelling their Network subscription. Eventually, the mass exodus of subscribers resulted in the cancellation page crashing. The hashtag also got mainstream coverage when Time ran a story on their website about the Royal Rumble upsetting fans. Just like last year with Batista's win upsetting fans, the vocal uproar has resulted in unwanted publicity for the WWE. Last year the company turned that around into an organic storyline with Bryan's character, ultimately making the publicity a success. This year is a very different story. The WWE Network was launched last February and WWE have struggled to break even on their investment. They needed one million subscribers to make the pay per view / on demand service work at $9.99 a month, but as of late October they only had 731,000 subscribers. If fans are indeed quitting the service in numbers large enough to crash the website, then that's a very worrying matter for WWE to think about. The creative choice for Reigns to win the Rumble has perhaps disillusioned fans enough that they'll no longer pay for the WWE product. Goodwill needs to be restored as soon as possible between Vince McMahon and pro wrestling fans. Realistically, the only way to do that is to elevate Daniel Bryan into the WrestleMania 31 title match. On the other hand, maybe fans who cancelled last night were always intending to do so. For some WWE fans it makes sense to subscribe for the Rumble, then cancel and resubscribe for WrestleMania. The month of February is basically a placeholder until March's big Mania event. Ironically, the WWE did a great job of promoting the Network during Sunday's Rumble broadcast. They announced a new backstage documentary and a new Steve Austin podcast with Triple H. Those are two things that make it well worth sticking around as a WWE Network customer.
