5. John Cena Is Only The 2nd Man To Win US Title In Houston
From time-to-time, Michael Cole hits out with an interesting factoid that comes out of left field. Looking to sell the importance of the WWE United States Title bout between Seth Rollins and John Cena, the announcer informed fans that there had only been one US Title switch in Houston before Night Of Champions. In 1988, Barry Windham defeated Nikita Koloff in a tournament final to capture the gold. The belt had earlier been vacated when then-champion Dusty Rhodes attacked NWA President Jim Herd. Windham's victory on the house show would prove to be the final US Title win in Houston, at least until now. By pinning Rollins, John Cena became only the 2nd man to win the United States Title in the Texan city. Cena had only dropped the title to Rollin at SummerSlam in August, so his win wasn't treated as monumental. Nonetheless, this intriguing little fact adds some weight to the outcome of the co-main event. Obviously, the WWE US Title is a different belt to the one Windham captured, but it's still regarded by the company as sharing the same lineage.
