No, Alberto Del Rio was not on the verge of returning to WWE prior to Vince McMahon's imposed resignation.

Death, taxes, and Alberto claiming he is heading back to the market leaders are life's three certainties. A year simply cannot pass without Del Rio making these unfounded statements. Should it ever happen, the calendar will remain stuck on 31 December until he jumps on a podcast.

It has happened again this month, with the former WWE Champion announcing, after a match on 5 October, that he was on his way back to the promotion until McMahon lost power last year (per the Wrestling Observer Newsletter).

Fightful Select has effectively rubbished Del Rio's claims. The outlet spoke to a WWE higher-up, who quipped, simply: "No ****ing chance."

That seems pretty straightforward.

Del Rio, 46, has been out of WWE since his September 2016 release. He had violated the company's Wellness Policy a few weeks prior to this, while there were also reports that he would be exercising an opt-out clause in his contract to do what he claimed were broken promises.

December 2021 saw charges of aggravated kidnapping and sexual assault against Del Rio dropped following May 2020 allegations, for which Alberto was released on a $50,000 bail.
