WWE only became interested in Dragon Lee after realising he'd made an appearance on AEW TV without a contract.

Dragon Lee revealing that he will be heading to WWE in January took much of the wrestling landscape by surprise over the last day or so. But the deal had actually been in place for a few weeks, with Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Radio noting how "they were told to keep it quiet" and they wouldn't make an announcement until after Lee and Dralistico won the AAA tag titles during this week's Noche de Campeones event.

Dave would also highlight how it was interesting that Lee pinned an AEW star (from the FTR team) on his way out of the promotion, with Tony Khan being aware the masked star's incoming move to his biggest rivals.

Also, it was explained on the latest edition of WOR that AEW were keen on signing Lee, too. And that, like recent AEW signing Bandido, WWE only became interested in signing Lee after learning that he'd appeared on AEW programming recently without being signed to a deal with TK's company.

After missing out on the aforementioned Bandido, managing to pull off the acquisition of one of the hottest talents on the planet can only be seen as a huge win for WWE. And could merely be the start of WWE's quest to sign even more "standout" talent in 2023.
