WWE Smackdown To Introduce Brand-Specific Women's And Tag Team Titles
New championships to debut after SummerSlam.
With the revelation that the WWE Women's Championship and the WWE Tag Team Championships will be exclusive to Raw, many fans have expected that Smackdown will unveil their own versions of the division-specific titles.
Now, The Wrestling Observer is reporting that both of those championships will be added to the blue brand, though not until after SummerSlam.
When the brand split was first announced, it was rumored that, even though there would be a world championship on each brand, the Women's and Tag Team Champions would travel back and forth between Raw and Smackdown. Ultimately, the company decided that every superstar and title would be permanently assigned a brand, and when Raw selected both Charlotte and The New Day, they got the rights to both of their championships.
Creating a new Women's Title for Smackdown makes sense, as the brand has its own division with no prize hanging in the balance. The addition of the belt will give Becky Lynch, Natalya, Naomi, Eva Marie, and NXT call-ups Alexa Bliss and Carmella an end goal in their upcoming battles.
Likewise, the creation of a Smackdown Tag Team Championship will mean that The Usos, American Alpha, The Vaudevillains, The Ascension, Breezango, and The Hype Bros will fight for more than just bragging rights.
This will leave WWE's main roster with at least nine total titles, including the returning Cruiserweight Championship.
