WWE SummerSlam 2020 No Longer Taking Place In Boston
Where and when will WWE's next Big Four PPV go down?
Though it seemed all but unavoidable that WWE SummerSlam 2020 would not take place in an arena venue with fans in attendance, WWE has only now officially announced a change in venue.
Here is their statement:
In coordination with our local partners, government officials and TD Garden, WWE's SummerSlam and related events will no longer take place in Boston. Refunds are available at the original point of purchase. We are grateful to the city of Boston for their longstanding partnership and look forward to holding WWE events at TD Garden in the future. SummerSlam will stream live on Sunday, August 23, at 7 p.m. ET on WWE Network, and information regarding a new location for the event is forthcoming.
As with all their PPVs, the event will air on the WWE Network, the Kickoff Show will begin at 6pm ET. Fans who had pre-purchased tickets can obtain refunds at the original point of purchase.
Commentators had previously speculated that WWE had planned SummerSlam as a their big "comeback" show post-lockdown. However, as the ongoing global health crisis continues to ravage the United States with no end sight, it's unlikely that WWE will be able to hold the kind of mass events they're used to in the near future, even with their previously reported desire to have fans back by the Fall.
No matches have been officially confirmed for SummerSlam 2020 at the time of writing, though it is believed that WWE has had to tear up several plans following Edge's injury and the decision not to use Brock Lesnar while fans are unable to attend shows. Drew McIntyre vs. Randy Orton for the WWE Championship is a rumoured main event.
