He may still have role at WrestleMania 35.

It seems WWE were thinking along the same lines as many of their fantasy scribes with regards to a possible opponent for Roman Reigns come WrestleMania 35, as rumour has it the company were originally planning for their resident Big Dog to square off with kinsman and great mate The Rock.

According to the usually reliable WrestleVotes, Rock was scheduled to win the Royal Rumble and then face Roman Reigns for the Universal Title in New Jersey. Obviously, Roman stepping away due to illness means that idea is no longer possible - but the Rock might still have a place on the card regardless.

There's still a faint chance Rock could feature - and win - the Royal Rumble, setting up a long-awaited rematch with Brock Lesnar. The two faced way back at SummerSlam 2002, with Rock doing the honours for his emerging replacement before jetting off for a new life in Hollywood. It'd be in line with the company's recent habit of promoting matches better suited for fifteen years ago.

With eligible candidates rapidly running out, The Rock has also been put in contention to headline next year's Hall of Fame. That doesn't seem likely if he has a huge match the following night - especially if it is being billed as a potential retirement bout. Watch this space.
