There was a lot of intrigue ahead of WrestleMania when it came to which match would actually open the show. It was clear that it couldn't be a throwaway match because of the fans' return, but it was hard to know what to expect from WWE on this one.
They ultimately went with the WWE Championship match between Bobby Lashley and Drew McIntyre - during which the Almighty champion retained his gold by utilising the Hurt Lock on his distracted opponent. Fans were quick to praise the physical bout, applauding the two men involved for succeeding in such a huge moment for WWE.

Most were pleasantly surprised because, though Lashley's victory allows him to continue his title reign, many thought a feelgood McIntyre victory was the more likely option.
