Finn Balor currently reigns supreme as NXT Champion, though this wasn't part of WWE's original blueprint when sending the 'Prince' back to the black and gold brand.

Speaking to Bleacher Report's Graham GSM Matthews last week, Balor claimed that there was "no real plan" for him returning to NXT in October 2019, and that everything was played by ear:-

“The initial thought process was we'll go to NXT, see how it works out, and it might be three months, it might be six months, there's no real plan."

As far as potentially going back to the main roster goes, Balor revealed that while the idea has been discussed more than once, he's happy where he is:-

"I know there's been discussion back and forth a couple of times about whether I should go back to Raw or SmackDown, but for me, I'm very happy in NXT and I'm willing to give my heart and soul in NXT as long as there's a position there for me. Nothing's been concrete and there's been no set time frame on anything. It was more like, 'Finn, would you like to be a part of NXT?' 'Absolutely.' NXT is a part of me and I want to be there. As long as there's a position there for me, I'm very grateful for it."

Balor has been NXT Champion since September 2020, beating Adam Cole to win the vacant belt after Karrion Kross was forced to relinquish it due to injury. His most recent defence came against Pete Dunne, whom he defeated at TakeOver: Vengeance Day last week.

This is Finn's second run with the belt. He previously reigned between July 2015 and April 2016, playing a huge role in NXT's rise as a legitimate third WWE brand until he was called up to Raw that summer.
