Before one-man event machines like Geoff Johns and Brian Bendis ever put pen to paper, writer Chris Claremont wrote the book on how to do big, epic stories within the comic book format. In this particular example, a nightmarish dystopian world where mutants are being hunted to extinction and/or held in internment camps must be averted. The X-Men seek to prevent an assassination and, in doing so, stop this dreadful state of future events from ever coming into being. Dystopian futures are visited A LOT in comic books, but, in a modern sense, at least, it all started here. Even today, events such as DCs recent Futures End storyline can all trace their lineage back to this one, incredible story. Or, as Ed Wood might say, future events such as these will affect you in the future!
