The writers of DC Comics have had some awfully strange ideas, but having a standalone brain be one of the criminal masterminds is undoubtedly among the worst they've ever come up with. Brain, originally a brilliant French scientist, debuted in 1964 in Doom Patrol #86 when a member of his team grew jealous of his work and tried to kill him, the brain alone surviving. The potential evil of a single organ of the human body may be doubtful, but Brain managed to found and join purely wicked organizations such as the Brotherhood of Evil and the Secret Society of Supervillains. Some scientists join prestigious academic groups, others diabolical villain organisations. Forget about weird anthropomorphic toads, nuts with pig masks, and psychic zombie gorillas; an organ is now a villain. Even getting past questions like "How does this brain even survive?" just trying to fathom the idiocy of watching Superman or Batman or The Flash staring down a pink lump of brain tissue is enough to see the idiocy of the character. In an attempt to make the character less ridiculous, writers have rendered him with a casing that attempts to show some sort of menacing glare, which is more like putting makeup on a gorilla than actually improving a villain.
