Image's The Walking Dead comic book series is filled with a number of memorable and bloody deaths as characters are frequently killed by zombies, or by other surviving members of civilisation. But the death of Hershel Greene's twin daughters Rachel and Susie during the Safety Behind Bars arc might be the bloodiest and most disturbing in the entire series because of its total shock-factor and the precedent it set for the series going forward.
Prior to the death of his daughters, Hershel is already reeling emotionally after other family members are killed by a zombie invasion on his quiet farm. He reluctantly joins Rick at the prison and eventually settles in thinking he might finally find some peace in this horrific apocalyptic universe. Instead, he stumbles on the decapitated bodies of his two young daughters.
As it turns out, Hershel's daughters were killed by another prison inmate, proving that there were other monsters in The Walking Dead beyond the flesh-eating zombies that walked the Earth. This plot development would prove prescient as other survivors came forward and committed acts of utter brutality on Ricks group, such as the Governor and Negan.
