4. Spider-Man Thwarts An Alien Invasion By Himself

In the back-up story of ASM #2, Spidey fights the Tinkerer, an old man who owns a radio repair shop. On his way to assist Professor Cobbwell with some €œurgent experiments€ during his weekend (Peter really was a nerd), he€™s instructed to pick up the professor€™s radio (jeez€ it€™s not enough to get unpaid laboratory assistance, you also have him running your errands?).

It turns out, the Tinkerer is actually an alien in disguise, working with a sleeper cell to spy on Earthlings through their radios. Seriously.

After Spider-Man defeats them, a giant spaceship takes off in the middle of Queens and no one notices or cares. This was before characters like Doctor Octopus and the Green Goblin. Lee wisely kept Spidey away from alien threats for a good long time.
