There are many commendable aspects of the Harry Potter movies. Though the detail of J.K. Rowling’s original vision was slightly lacking at times, Harry’s on-screen adventures succeeded much more than they failed.

The performances were a key part of this success, and despite the inevitable problems that come with child actors, the three central performers dramatically improved with each entry. What’s more, some of the casting choices were spot on. Alan Rickman, Gary Oldman, David Thewlis, and Maggie Smith all excelled as their respective characters. Indeed, it’s hard to imagine anyone else playing their roles.

Unsurprisingly, these talented actors were not short of work when they left the wizarding world. They’ve collectively starred in a vast range of films covering everything from science fiction to historical dramas. Whilst not everything they’ve done has been brilliant, the Harry Potter cast have been part of some impressive pictures over the last few years.

And given there are so many personalities in Rowling’s world, it’s been interesting for Harry Potter fans to see some of their favourite actors playing characters with plenty of time under the spotlight...

10. Lady In The Van – Maggie Smith (Minerva McGonagall)

Lady in the Van is an odd little film about Alan Bennett’s experience with Mary Shepherd, a homeless woman who lived in a van parked on Bennett’s driveway in Camden, London.

The humour is the best part of the film. Maggie Smith hasn’t lost any of her charisma and wit over the years, and the combination of her amusing delivery and Bennett’s screenplay is a match made in heaven.

The film also utilises an interesting use of dialogue by having two separate versions of Bennett interact with one another. Though this is slightly disconcerting at first, you soon become accustomed to this technique thanks to Alex Jenning’s performance.

It’s not a ground-breaking movie by any means, but there’s plenty of simplistic charm throughout this strange story. If you’re looking for an amusing, offbeat film, Lady in the Van is definitely one to check out.
